What do Bayern Munich and Tranmere Rovers have in common?

Funnily enough, the answer isn't Champions League pedigree, recent high finishes in the National League nor language, geography or even kit colour. The clubs are simply polar opposites but a certain man - Dale Jennings - has managed to traverse both sides.

The ex-Liverpool youngster shocked the footballing world in 2011 when he jumped up from then League One Tranmere to European juggernauts Bayern Munich, linking up with their youth team.

The 18-year-old needed only one season in the Tranmere first-team to attract the attention of a club that has featured the likes of Gerd Muller, Franz Beckenbauer and Oliver Kahn across its illustrious history.

He would train under the wing of ex-Liverpool and German international Dieter Hamman and, according to the Daily Mail, he was viewed as 'a brighter prospect than team-mate Emre Can.'

Dale Jennings failed to impress at Bayern

It still goes down as one of the most bizarre transfers in recent history and it's not difficult to see why but seven years on, how have things unfolded for Jennings?

His experience in the game has certainly been a sad one, with the Englishman later going onto admit that he struggled with the mental side of the game and keeping himself in shape.

He made 36 appearances for Bayern Munich II across two years in Germany, appearing for the senior team in a friendly and scoring memorably against FC Augsburg II.

Nevertheless, he struggled to kick on at the Allianz Arena and Hamman later cited his poor language skills as holding him back. He narrowly missed the Pep Guardiola era and his £1.5 million price tag weighed heavily despite being tipped to make the first-team.

Return to England with Barnsley and MK Dons

In the end, he returned to England and signed on with Barnsley but was sent off just five minutes into his debut for a high tackle on James McArthur. He was then loaned to MK Dons for the first half of the 2013-14 campaign.

He would go onto to make 34 league appearances at Oakwell, accumulating four goals and won the Football League Young Player of the Month award.

Jennings then returned to MK Dons on a permanent basis, but made only one appearance with injuries conspiring against him and he was eventually released in February 2016.

Since then, the 25-year-old has remained a free agent and it remains to be seen whether he will return to English football.

It's certainly a cautionary tale for a young player who was thrown in the deep end far too early and his career has paid the penalty.

Besides, the other young talent that was spoken about at Tranmere but kept under wraps? Aaron Cresswell and that says it all.
