Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu, Madrid president Florentino Perez has wished to pair him with former teammate Rooney.
Spanish newspaper Sport has suggested that, encouraged by Rooney’s stalling contract talks, Real are set to offer Karim Benzema and Mahamadou Diarra in exchange.
Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of Benzema since his Lyon days but it was Real who swooped for the highly rated French star at a price of £30m. Benzema has played 25 times for Madrid this term, scoring seven goals and could be a ready made replacement if Rooney did leave but would have big boots to fill.
Ferguson has already admitted that players will be allowed to leave Manchester this summer, sparking fears over the futures of the likes of Michael Carrick with Diarra as a possible replacement.
Just today Rooney has admitted that he has been frustrated with his side’s inconsistency in the league this term which looks likely to cost them a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Despite Rooney’s frustrations, United are unlikely to want to sell their prized asset no matter the price.
