If you thought Tottenham’s FA Cup clash against Rochdale wasn’t worth watching this evening, you were sorely mistaken. The opening 45 minutes turned out to be the most bizarre halves of football we’ve seen this season.Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was at the centre of the controversy yet again, ruling out an early Erik Lamela goal for no obvious reason.Fernando Llorente was judged to have committed a foul in the build-up to the goal but very few football fans agreed with the decision.‘Shambles’ was a word used by most people in the moments after the decision to disallow the goal.

Son gets booked for illegal penalty

There was then more controversy later in the half when Son Heung-min, who had opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, had a chance to double Spurs’ advantage with a penalty five minutes later.

The South Korean forward stepped up and stroked the ball past Josh Lillis in the Rochdale goal, only for referee Paul Tierney to disallow it. To add insult to injury, he then booked Son.

Robbie Savage could not understand why

Robbie Savage, on co-commentary duty for BT Sport, simply could not understand why the penalty had been disallowed.

He was completely baffled by the decision.

Football fans are now mocking Savage

This amused and irritated football fans on social media in equal measure. How could Savage not be aware that players are no longer allowed to pause during run-ups before taking a penalty?

The rule was changed a couple of years ago and Son’s penalty this evening, as a result, was illegal and correctly ruled out.

Savage was subsequently mocked for his reaction…

Oh, Robbie.
