You get the feeling Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were just made to play with one another.

Every member of the trio found the back of the net against West Ham last weekend in a 4-1 thrashing that took the club to 100 goals for the season. It's statistics like that that make you wonder where the Reds would sit with a more consistent defence - and not too far behind Manchester City is probably the answer.

What makes the situation all the more staggering is that it comes just weeks after Liverpool casually let go arguably their finest player - Philippe Coutinho - to Barcelona.

It has seen attention turn to Liverpool's other resident Brazilian who has been widely praised for his often unspoken role in the club's ruthless front three.

Firmino plays between Salah and Mane, often dropping back into a false nine position to execute Jurgen Klopp's style of 'Gegenpressing' with sensational efficiency.

Oxlade-Chamberlain waxes lyrical about Firmino

The 26-year-old is quite literally Liverpool's first defender and yet, when pushing forward, he is just as brilliant with 22 goals in 38 appearances. Firmino seems to be a Jack of all trades and a master at the lot of them.

Few have put it quite as perfectly in recent weeks as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who was waxing lyrical about his teammates and Firmino in particular during an interview with Liverpool's official website.

Mixed in with some rather rudimentary and fleeting praise for Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke, he couldn't have summed up Firmino's role and importance to the team better if he tried.

Oxlade-Chamberlain highlights his defensive role in false nine

“Bobby is such a quality striker, especially in our team – he fits the team so well,” Oxlade-Chamberlain stated.

“We’ve got Danny Ings and Dom Solanke that do it really well as well, defending from the front. They all work hard. Bobby is one of the best I’ve seen at winning the ball back from the front; he presses people from their blind side and they don’t know he’s coming and he wins it back.

“He’s really good at dropping in as well; he can play as a false nine where he is not always so high, he drops in, comes short for the ball and that opens up the space for Mo and Sadio to run in behind."

Too right, Alex and it led into some eclectic praise of the trio.

He continued: “The three of them work really well and when they’re playing the way they can, when Bobby is coming deep and the other two are running in behind, it gives you so many options to play in behind or to feet to link up with them.

“When they’re on song, there is no three you’d rather have in front of you.”
