Manchester United’s academy has developed some fine talent of late, from Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Andreas Pereira to Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.

However, Paul Pogba is arguably the best player to graduate from their youth system in recent years, making seven appearances before joining Juventus in 2012.

Of course, Pogba returned to Old Trafford in 2016 for a then-world-record fee, but it was Sir Alex Ferguson who gave him his first call up to the senior first-team eight years ago.

The legendary manager selected the Frenchman and three other academy youngsters in his squad as Wes Brown’s goal gave Man Utd a 1-0 FA Cup win over non-league Crawley Town.

None of the four youth stars made it onto the pitch during the fifth round tie on February 19, 2011, but what happened to the prospects Fergie promoted with Pogba? Let’s take a look.

Ryan Tunnicliffe

Ryan Tunnicliffe won the coveted Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year award in 2010-11 but only made two senior appearances for Man United in four seasons.

The centre-midfielder was loaned out to then-Championship clubs Peterborough United, Barnsley and Ipswich Town before his permanent Man Utd exit in January 2014, when he joined Fulham.

This deal reunited him with ex-coach Rene Meulensteen, but upon his prompt sacking, his successor Felix Magath deemed Tunnicliffe surplus to requirements.

So, he was forced to move to Wigan Athletic on loan just 25 days after leaving United for Fulham, and the Englishman was shipped out again in the next window, this time to Blackburn Rovers.

Last summer, after 65 matches for Fulham, Tunnicliffe was released and the 25-year-old signed for Millwall, bagging a goal and an assist in 17 league starts so far this season.

Oliver Norwood

Oliver Norwood joined Man United at the mere age of seven, but despite three loan spells and impressing for the under-18s, he never played for the Red Devils’ senior team.

The midfield man rejected United’s contract offer in June 2012 to move to Huddersfield Town, where he scored 12 goals in 90 games before joining Championship rivals Reading.

Norwood racked up 92 appearances in just two seasons at the Madejski Stadium but left for Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2016, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League.

In July, the 26-year-old joined Fulham on a season-long loan, and although he isn’t a part of the Brighton team currently trying to survive, he’s enjoyed a good international career.

The English-born Northern Irishman has amassed over 50 caps for the Green and White Army, including starting all four of their matches at Euro 2016.

Josh King

The final player is versatile striker Joshua King, who, as many of you will know, has plied his trade at Bournemouth since 2015.

Before leaving Man Utd, for whom he played just twice, King had stints at four clubs, from Borussia Monchengladbach to Blackburn - the side he eventually joined in 2013.

The Norwegian scored just eight goals in 74 games for Blackburn before arriving at Bournemouth, where he’s established himself as a Premier League regular.

Last season, King fired in an impressive 16 league goals for Eddie Howe’s men – as many as Chelsea star Eden Hazard managed.

The 26-year-old has five goals this campaign and continues to feature at international level, scoring ten times from his 31 Norway caps.
