Ever since Georges St-Pierre announced that he would be making his return to UFC after over a three-year absence, many MMA fans have been discussing a possible dream fight for him against Conor McGregor.

For the time being though, the fight isn't happening for many reasons. First of all, after returning to the UFC last November at UFC 217 to defeat Michael Bisping for the UFC Middleweight Championship, GSP vacated the title a month later due to suffering from ulcerative colitis and he's not fought since.

Notorious, on the other hand, hasn't stepped foot inside the Octagon since he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the UFC Lightweight title. Most reports have stated that he will soon be stripped of this championship and will likely face the winner of UFC 223's Tony Ferguson vs Khabib Nurmagomedov later this year.

However, it's not out of the realm of possibility that St-Pierre vs McGregor could happen at some point in the future, potentially at the end of this year or in 2019. If it is booked to happen, Diego Sanchez wants the two to make the fight a historic occasion.

In an Instagram post, the UFC fighter has suggested that the two fight at 165lbs for a new UFC Super Lightweight Championship. He said the following:

“@thenotoriousmma come on brother we need 165lb weight you have the power with @ufc and @danawhite to make it happen! #first3divisionchampionfight and winner goes down as the #realgoat #millions #thesportneedsthisweightclass @georgesstpierre talks 155 165 is realistic #makeithappen.”

Not only would the winner of this fight become the first ever UFC Super Lightweight Champion, but they would also become the first fighter ever in UFC history to win a title in three separate weight classes.

Having a 165lb weight division also benefits UFC, as they have plenty of talent that would be able to compete at that weight easily. However, a word of caution must be issued regarding the proposed first title bout.

As we have seen, both St-Pierre and McGregor have a recent history of not defending their titles once they are won, so to have them as the marquee fight to get this division off the ground is dangerous. It's a great way to kick the weight class off, but the division could be put on hold as soon as it gets started.
