Arsenal fans were pretty worried about their Europa League chances when they entered an AC Milan clash without Alexandre Lacazette at their disposal.

The Frenchman was ruled out for six weeks in mid-February after requiring a minor knee operation, leaving Danny Welbeck as Arsenal's only number nine with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cup-tied on a technicality.

Welbeck has struggled for fitness in recent years, hasn't reached double figures in a season for Arsenal and has never inspired confidence as a solo front man.

Nevertheless, he was certainly no detriment to Arsenal's performance last night as the Gunners secured an impressive 2-0 win at the San Siro thanks to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey.

As for Welbeck's showing, the Mirror awarded him a 6/10 and noted: "Just can’t score for toffee. But worked hard and produced a fine ball from which Mkhitaryan should have scored."

Welbeck performances well - but still no goal

We couldn't have put it better ourselves. Welbeck was all over the pitch, working hard and creating but simply couldn't find the goal that has evaded him recently.

It wasn't from a lack of chances, though, and one opportunity in particular rather amused and frustrated Arsenal fans.

In the second-half, the Englishman went one-on-one with Gianluigi Donnarumma only for the Italian to win a goal-kick by deflecting the ball against Welbeck. The Arsenal striker then proceeded to tumble to the ground in a tangle of limbs.

Mesut Ozil 'likes' Instagram video poking fun at Welbeck

This very clip inspired one particular Arsenal Instagram page to upload a post about it and, remarkably, Mesut Ozil himself even dropped a like.

Yes, really. Is it a complete accident, was it even Ozil or was the German simply teasing his teammate? Who knows, but it makes for amusing viewing - take a look:

Ozil was on fire last night, providing both assists and making a fool of Martin Keown's pre-match comments, so maybe he could afford to offload the banter if it was in fact him.

It isn't the most favourable clip of Welbeck, though, that's for sure and neither is the branding of 'bambi on ice' but the 27-year-old simply can't catch a break right now.

The Gunners could get away with missed chances like that amidst such a brilliant performance, but Welbeck can't mess about if he's granted such an opportunity in later rounds.

Nevertheless, Welbeck will have the opportunity to silence the doubters in the return leg next week in a tie that should already be in Arsenal's hands. When Ostersunds can win at the Emirates these days, however, you wouldn't bet on it quite yet.
