Scott Quigg endured a tough and punishing night in Carson, California, as a shocking image showed the damage caused by his defeat to Oscar Valdez. The fight was in doubt after torrential rain in the area, yet once it did go ahead, Quigg was on the wrong end of a unanimous points decision, as Valdez managed to retain his unbeaten record with 117-111, 117-111, 118-110 scorecards. The Manchester fighter emerged with great credit, though, with a battling performance that saw him cause the WBO featherweight champion intermittent problems throughout the fight.Indeed, the Mexican lost a tooth and suffered a broken jaw during a bloody battle.Whilst battling and spirited from Quigg, the Mexican's contributions were more accurate than his competitor, and after having his left eye marked early on, the Mancunian took more and more blows, leading to the damage shown in the gruesome image. The UK star gave the bout his all, and although he failed to take the victory, will certainly have earned himself some new admirers on the other side of the Atlantic. Former WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko was one of the esteemed onlookers for Quigg's first fight in America. After the fight, the 29-year-old agreed that Valdez deserved the victory."I'm gutted. It was a great fight and I was in it all the way along, but there are no excuses."

Safe to say boxing fans, including Eddie Hearn, were quick to tweet about the horrific nose injury.

He also revealed that a fractured foot in the build-up had been the reason behind his failure to make weight on time.

It isn't Quigg's first high profile defeat, and he will have to re-group again.

In early 2016 he took on Carl Frampton in a huge pay-per-view clash at Manchester Arena, where he again showed desire, before suffering a points defeat.

After his second defeat, Quigg will work with trainer Freddie Roach to plan his next move, and work towards a title shot once more.
