WWE Fastlane is now in the books, which means all of the focus turns to WrestleMania 34 with the Monday Night RAW and SmackDown LIVE exclusive pay-per-views now in the rearview mirror.Randy Orton completed the Grand Slam by dethroning Bobby Roode to become the United States Champion, Charlotte Flair retained her SmackDown Women’s Championship with a surprising twist at the end while AJ Styles booked his match with Shinsuke Nakamura for WrestleMania 34 by retaining his WWE Championship. With those results, the WrestleMania 34 plans are now much clearer. Here’s what went down on Sunday night.

BREEZANGO & TYE DILLINGER DEF CHAD GABLE, SHELTON BENJAMIN AND MOJO RAWLEY

In the kickoff show, the strange teams of Breezango and Tye Dillinger going up against Chad Gable, Shelton Benjamin and Mojo Rawley did enough to kick off the night in the right way. That’s because there was enough entertainment and some hilarity from Breezango which had fans interested. However, the first half of the match was definitely more interesting than the second half, which felt a little lacklustre.

Gable had another impressive showing but other than the humour, there wasn’t anything specific that stood out which makes this a must-watch if you’re going to watch Fastlane again. Dillinger pinned Rawley for the victory, with the latter getting plenty of heat in his match with some great chanting, which did die down eventually.

SHINSUKE NAKAMURA DEF RUSEV

Not many were too pleased when this match was booked, as it didn’t really benefit anyone but Rusev certainly had more to lose despite being so over. Right off the bat, WWE made a brilliant decision to have both men kick off the main card as Aiden English set the tone with his wonderful microphone work.

Rusev and Nakamura both have a hard-hitting style and they complemented each other so well throughout their contest. The fans were certainly invested in this with plenty of Nakamura and Rusev Day chants which shows just how popular Rusev is, even when he’s going up against someone as big as The King of Strong Style.

There were several impressive spots in the match, including a huge Super Kick from Rusev, but it was Nakamura who kicked off the night in the right note and set the tone for the rest to follow with a Kinshasa.

Score - 7/10

RANDY ORTON DEF. BOBBY ROODE

Randy Orton and Bobby Roode successfully kept up the face following the opening match with a great story. Their finishing moves were built up and how dangerous they could be, while WWE did a fantastic job of highlighting the different approaches both men take. It was visible that Roode preferred the fast-paced approach, while Orton is notorious for his slow and methodical approach.

Again, there was plenty of back and forth action with the close calls leaving fans on the edge of their seats. The whole Grand Slam Championship story was playing in the back of everyone’s minds, but the assumption was that The Viper would achieve that feat at WrestleMania 34 instead. However, he hit a beautiful RKO after Roode attempted a dive from the top rope to claim his first United States Championship.

Jinder Mahal event got involved, attacking Orton before Roode hit a Glorious DDT on Orton as well, which now looks like we’re heading towards a triple threat match at WrestleMania 34.

Score - 7/10

NATALYA & CARMELLA DEF. BECKY LYNCH & NAOMI

There wasn’t really anything to this tag team match which had the fans invested. We did see some good spots from all four women, but there was nothing out of the ordinary which really took the audience by surprise. This was perhaps because the other women’s match at Fastlane was going to be the one that fans talked about the most, but perhaps because there was no genuine story to tell and the fact that it seemed forced suggested that fans weren’t interested.

There wasn’t anything too memorable in this match which immediately stands out, as it’s exactly what you’d expect to see on a regular episode of SmackDown LIVE with Carmella and Natalya sneakily picking up the win.

THE USOS VS. THE NEW DAY - NO CONTEST

This match - which many thought should have taken place at WrestleMania - was seen as the potential show stealer because of how much chemistry all five men have. Arguably, they are two of the best teams in recent memory and the expectations were so high that many thought this was going to be their best match yet.

Sadly, the match itself wasn’t an instant classic, but it did have fans interested. This is down to the back and forth action, while they used their match time to steal each other's moves and taunt one another. However, everyone was left talking about Harper and Rowan of The Bludgeon Brothers who attacked both teams to end with a no contest finish.

They literally left a trail of destruction with fans not believing what they were seeing, such was the impact they had made. However, it was the perfect way to throw them into the tag team championship scene and build them up as a serious threat. Plus, it’s the perfect way to make sure both The Usos and The New Day get into a marquee WrestleMania match. With Fastlane in the books, The Bludgeon Brothers’ actions are still something WWE fans are talking about.

CHARLOTTE FLAIR DEF. RUBY RIOTT

While this seemed predictable on paper - which it still was - not many would have expected that Ruby Riott actually put up a valiant effort in her match. She brought the fight to Charlotte and played the heel role perfectly with her heel antics, trash talk and in-ring style - all in her first championship match on the main roster.

While she’s not quite the elite name right now, you wouldn’t have thought anything less when watching the match. However, it was visible that she was only a ‘filler’ until Charlotte moved on to her next challenger, which is what we saw at Fastlane. Asuka officially moved from Monday Night RAW to the blue brand which confirmed the match between the pair for WrestleMania 34.

The prospect of seeing this match, the stare-off and the reactions increased the rating of this match alone as it added to the overall experience.

AJ STYLES RETAINS THE WWE CHAMPIONSHIP

Where can we begin with this match? You have six fantastic talents in one match with an opportunity to walk into WrestleMania 34 as the WWE Championship. All six men were given enough memorable moments and chances to shine, and they completely took advantage of them from Dolph Ziggler’s impressive run to Baron Corbin showing dominance right through to both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn coming ridiculously close to capturing the championship. That was until Shane McMahon got involved after eating a massive Super Kick from Owens.

Steel steps, close calls, bodies flying everywhere and broken tables means this is a must-watch. There were several unique and engaging stories being told too. We had the Owens and Zayn situation which finally boiled over, The Phenomenal One desperately wanted to face Nakamura while Cena simply wanted to get to WrestleMania in the first place, and that emotion was visible once the match had ended.

Although one eye was on the stage to see if The Undertaker would return, the match itself was fantastic from start to finish as it kicked off with fast-paced action, and finished in the same way with Styles hitting the Phenomenal Forearm on Owens. There’s not really anything else you could have asked of the six men, they gave it their all and it was clear to see.
