Jose Mourinho has often been critical of over-exuberant managers on the touchline this season.

Without naming names Mourinho has called out his colleagues for the way they behave during matches, claiming that he deserves an award for the way he’s conducted himself this campaign.

"I'm fully committed to win the award this season of the best-behaved manager on the touchline,” he said recently.

"Because I don't behave as a clown on the touchline, it means that I lost my passion. I prefer to behave the way I am doing it, much more mature, better for my team and myself, I don't think you have to behave like a crazy guy on the touchline to have that passion.”

Even in United’s biggest match of the season against Liverpool on Saturday, Mourinho remained calm during the 2-1 win - preferring to scribble on his notepad, rather than gesticulate to his players.

His opposite number, however, was pretty animated.

And there was one moment in the second-half that could have seen Jurgen Klopp sent to the stands.

The German manager was seen running down the touchline shouting aggressively. But it wasn’t at any of the officials, it was at one of his players - Dejan Lovren.

The defender dived into two stupid tackles, needlessly conceding a free-kick. And Klopp lost it.

He ran 20 yards outside of his technical area to give his player a very stern telling off.

MOURINHO'S REACTION TO KLOPP'S TOUCHLINE RANT

What did Mourinho make of it all?

Well, the Portuguese boss actually had a rather surprising reaction to Klopp not being dismissed for his behaviour.

"Probably you are not expecting my answer: I'm happy with the decision," Mourinho said.

"Because he was not speaking against the referee. He was upset with a player and the same happened to me against Crystal Palace where I was upset with my player and therefore they [the officials] understood that too.

"I think [fourth official] Martin Atkinson, after so many years of this, I think made the right decision. I saw it. He [Klopp] was very upset with his player and not at the referee.

"If you leave the technical area by a couple of metres - or in this case 20 metres - but to speak to your own player and not to complain about the referee's decision, they made the right decision."

Well said, Jose.

To be fair, the United boss probably understood why Klopp was so annoyed with his player and couldn’t blame him for going mad at him.

Lovren should have been stronger for both of United’s goals in the first-half and his decision to lunge in at Marouane Fellaini towards the end of the match clearly pushed Klopp over the edge.
