You can hardly blame Andre Gomes for accepting the opportunity to join Barcelona back in July 2016.The classy central midfielder had impressed during his two seasons with Valencia and was riding the crest of a wave at the time after winning the European Championships with Portugal.Gomes will have been acutely aware that competition for first-team places at the Camp Nou is fierce but Barça wanted him - they paid an initial €35 million for his signature - and he clearly backed himself to force his way into the starting line-up.Sadly, Gomes has failed to do that over the past two years. He’s still made 72 appearances for the Catalan giants, but he is not one of Ernesto Valverde’s go-to guys when the big matches come around. The 24-year-old has struggled when he’s come off the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks and was even booed by his own fans after coming on for Andres Iniesta against Atletico Madrid.Barça goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was furious that the club’s supporters were jeering one of their own players but it just sums up how disappointing Gomes has been since arriving from Valencia.

Gomes reveals all about his life since joining Barça

Gomes, who entered the fray as a second-half sub against Malaga on Saturday afternoon, has conducted an honest interview with Panenka Magazine in which he revealed how his life has been negatively affected by moving to Barcelona.

It makes for heartbreaking reading.

“I do not feel good playing…I’m not enjoying what I do,” Gomes revealed to Panenka, per Football Espana. “My friends tell me I am playing with the hand brake on and I know this is true, and it is bothering me why I cannot step it up from there.

“Things changed after my first six months and there was more pressure, which is fine but I’m too self-critical of myself…I’m a perfectionist and cannot tolerate my mistakes, it has become a hell...maybe that is not the right word.

“I cannot shake negative moments out of my head and it impacts on my performances and I am thinking too much.

“It leads me to feel ashamed and sometimes I feel that I cannot leave the house due to the shame and due to people looking at me.”

The fact that he’s too ashamed to leave his house suggests he’s currently at the wrong football club.

Gomes's comments are honest but untimely

Gomes should be praised for his honesty, even if his comments are unlikely to go down well with Valverde and his teammates ahead of the business end of the season.

Barça currently sit eight points clear at the top of La Liga and face Chelsea on Wednesday night in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
