It was another disappointing night in the Champions League for Manchester United.

Coming off the back of a 0-0 draw in Spain, the English side were expected to cruise through to the quarter-finals of the competition with relative ease.

However, Jose Mourinho's side were negative from the start, and were staring at an exit from Europe's biggest club competition when Wissam Ben Yedder scored two second half goals in the space of four minutes.

Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for the home side with six minutes of normal time remaining, but United could not find the two more goals they needed and thus crashed out of the Champions League in disappointing fashion.

That means it has been nearly four years since the English giants last won a Champions League knockout match, a quite unacceptable statistic for a team of United's stature.

After last night's dismal showing, very few home players can emerge with any credit.

However, Romelu Lukaku was one name that has been praised for his performance.

Although he was isolated for large periods of the game, the Belgian showed tremendous effort and passion throughout as he tried his best to fire his side to the quarter-finals.

His highlights from the game:

It has been some transformation for Lukaku, who was badly out of sorts throughout the end of 2017 and was struggling to hit the back of the net.

However, he has been back to his best in recent weeks, and many fans' perception of him has changed drastically.

The 24-year-old has endeared himself to the Old Trafford with the passion he shows on the pitch; most notably with how he has celebrated his side's goals in recent weeks.

After another passionate display against Sevilla, many are calling for him to be given the captaincy for next year.

Michael Carrick is the current club captain but will vacate the role at the end of the year due to retirement.

And, many think that Lukaku has displayed the necessary qualities and leadership skills to be his successor.

It would most certainly be a surprising choice, with David de Gea and Antonio Valencia other contenders to be United's next captain.

But given what Lukaku has shown on the pitch in recent weeks, he could well be United's best choice.
