It wasn't long ago when fans were saying 'Lionel Messi has never scored against Chelsea'.

Well, the Argentine superstar put that notion to bed and then some over the two legs of Barcelona's victory over Chelsea in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

After a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg - where Messi scored - Barcelona romped past Chelsea in the return leg at the Nou Camp with a 3-0 win where Messi scored a brace and assisted Ousmane Dembele.

It was yet another unbelievable display from the five-time Ballon d'Or winner as he scored his 100th goal in the Champions League, but it took him 14 fewer appearances and 266 fewer shots than it did Ronaldo.

Naturally, whenever Messi is leaving fans in awe, the Ronaldo-lovers are never far behind defending the Real Madrid's man legacy and arguing his corner for not only the best in the world today, but the greatest of all-time.

Former Barcelona man and now Match of the Day and BT Sport pundit Gary Lineker has always been an avid admirer of Messi and has never hidden the fact that he believes he is the best player in the world.

After witnessing Messi's show at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, Lineker saw a tweet from former player turned pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft that suggested that while Messi is the greatest 'player' ever, Ronaldo is the greatest 'goalscorer'.

Lineker's reply summed up why Messi really is the greatest:

Back in December, Linker even explained why Messi is better than Diego Maradona.

“Messi does four or five things in a match that I've never done one day in my career. You made some like him but Leo is every game,” he told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.

“He does amazing things. It is the best of all time. I never thought I would see someone better than Maradona.

“The numbers. Messi scores in almost every game. Diego did not put so many.

“Leo passes and dribbles like Diego but without being a born goalscorer he scores a lot. He is very clever.

“And it has been more years at the top of football. They are 12 already. It is a phenomenon.

"They say that Maradona won a World Cup and Leo did not but Leo has four Champions Leagues and Diego never won the European Cup. Then, it can be debated.

“The two are the best but for me, Messi a little more. Barça plays with 13 players because they have Messi.”
