On Wednesday night, Lionel Messi again showed why an ever-increasing number of football fans consider him to be the greatest player in football history. The Barcelona maestro scored the 99th and 100th Champions League goals of his remarkable career in the 3-0 victory over Chelsea at the Camp Nou, ensuring his side will be in Friday’s quarter-final draw.Messi was the difference between the two sides, beating Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with two nutmegs either side of half-time and, as he so often does, dictating the tempo of the match. He also set up Ousmane Dembele’s first-half goal with a stunning piece of play.Chelsea boss Antonio Conte embraced Messi after the full-time whistle and admitted the Argentine forward was the primary reason his side had been eliminated from the prestigious European competition.“Tonight in the two legs, Lionel Messi made the difference,” he told reporters. “We are talking about the best player in the world.”He later added: ”When you have the opportunity to make a great compliment to Messi, it is right to recognise a super, super, super top player. We are talking about a player who every season is able to score 60 goals."

Alan Shearer's tweet about Messi was perfect

So much has already been said and written about Messi in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s match but Alan Shearer summed it up best with his tweet about the five-time Ballon d’Or winner posted during the match.

The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer tweeted: “We should consider ourselves very fortunate to live in an era where we can watch the greatest player ever! #Messi #BARCHE”

Well said, Alan.

Messi isn't getting any younger, sadly

It’s important to remember that Messi is, despite what you might wish to believe, only human - which, of course, means there will come a day in the not-too-distant future when he hangs up his boots for good.

The South American turns 31 in June, so we all must relish him while we still can.

There will never be a player quite like Messi again.
