There was always the feeling that this week would be make or break for Manchester United. The Red Devils had games in the Champions League and FA Cup that could define their season and it's fair to say the former didn't set the right tone. With a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho's men crashed out of Europe. As a result, there was even more pressure riding on the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion with progression in the FA Cup proving their last shot at silverware. After defeat on Tuesday, too, Mourinho decided to shuffle the pack - benching Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez while starting Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.Shaw didn't have the best day at the office with Mourinho constantly giving him instructions from the sidelines and eventually substituting him at half-time.

Reaction to Martial's performance v Brighton

Martial, on the other hand, played out of his skin in the first-half.

Paul Scholes singled hime out as the biggest threat during the break, noting: “Martial looks like the one who can cause most problems. He's the one they need to get it to.

"They’ve been better tonight. Mourinho’s showing everyone he wants his players to get forward.”

Too true, Paul, with Martial causing havoc in the final third and showing some seriously impressive combination play with Juan Mata.

Fans reckon Martial has to start over Alexis Sanchez

However, Manchester United fans went that one step further and even thought that the Frenchman is a better option than Sanchez on current form. It's a massive claim but with the tweets amassing and top journalists making the same point, it cannot be ignored.

Check out the reaction below:

So, is it an overreaction?

The bottom line is that Sanchez has not delivered since leaving Arsenal and Martial's first-half performance was better than any 45 minutes his fellow attacker has produced at United.

That being said, Sanchez is the more talented and influential player on his day, and is commanding hefty wages at the club.

With Martial flying and Sanchez stalling, who Mourinho picks going forward will speak volumes.
