Marcos Rojo has divided opinion since joining Manchester United in 2014, but Jose Mourinho is certainly a huge fan of the centre-back and tied him down to a new contract this week.

Rojo put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with the Red Devils, which will keep him at the Theatre of Dreams until 2021.

"Since I joined Manchester United, it has been everything I thought it would be and more," said the 27-year-old. "I am extremely happy to extend my stay at this great club.

"When I joined, my aim was to help the team win trophies and we have done that over the past couple of seasons.

"I am working hard to get back on the pitch. I would like to thank the fans for their support and the manager for the confidence and help he has given me both on and off the pitch."

Rojo has only made seven Premier League appearances for United this season, which has been plagued by numerous injuries.

He's reportedly close to a return and one imagines he'll eventually work his way back into Mourinho's starting XI, most likely alongside Eric Bailly.

There was once a time when Rojo feared he would be 'kicked out' of United, though, following an incident involving a certain Sir Alex Ferguson.

Back in Christmas 2014, just six months after joining United and when Fergie was the club's director, Rojo lit some fireworks outside the legendary manager's house at 12am.

Rojo and Sir Alex were neighbours at the time and the Argentine had a game the next day, so it certainly wasn't the smartest move being up so late and making so much noise.

And evidently he immediately regretted it, because Rojo genuinely thought he was going to get sacked at United. Luckily for him, Fergie saw the funny side.

"At Christmas, my whole family came to spend the holidays, it is not customary to throw fireworks," Rojo told AS. "They all go to bed early.

"But I wanted to surprise my family and I threw them after midnight. We played the next day and Ferguson always comes to see us when we play at Old Trafford.

"'It was a good light show you did last night,' he told me when we crossed in the hallway. I wanted to die, I thought he would kick me out the club but luckily [he] took it well."

Just imagine what would have happened if Fergie was still United's manager and not Louis van Gaal. Rojo is a very lucky boy.
