Jay Bothroyd hit the nail on the head after Cardiff's Barclays Premier League dream lay in ruins.
The Bluebirds were beaten 3-2 by Blackpool at Wembley on Saturday to face another season in the Coca-Cola Championship. They twice led through goals from Michael Chopra and Joe Ledley, but were pegged back by Charlie Adam and Gary Taylor-Fletcher before Brett Ormerod cracked the winner for Blackpool to secure a lucrative top-flight berth.
"Blackpool were the better team on the day and deserved their win," said Bothroyd. "How big is the disappointment? Massive because we've fallen at the last hurdle."
He added: "We're gutted and heartbroken. For the majority of the season we played really well but we didn't turn up.
"You have to give credit to Blackpool. They showed the hunger and they stuck in there and they won the game, so well done to Ian Holloway and their boys."
