Many boxing fans are waiting for the highly anticipated rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez on May 5 later this year after their first encounter in September last year ended in a draw.

However, there is a chance now that this rematch will not take place, as Alvarez has recently been tested positive for a banned substance and could face a suspension. The fight is still currently going ahead, but if the Mexican is suspended, Golovkin will need to find a new opponent.

During a recent interview, the Kazakhstani boxer revealed that if Canelo was to be suspended, he would like to face off against Billy Joe Saunders in Las Vegas on May 5.

Golovkin said to RingTV according to ESPN: "If that fight can't happen, the next step for me is Saunders, since it is my dream to get all the world championship belts."

With Golovkin being the Unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, IBO middleweight champion, and Saunders being the WBO middleweight champion, a fight between the two would be a unification clash.

However, whether or not Saunders will be able to fight in May remains to be seen, as his proposed title defense against Martin Murray at London's O2 Arena on April 14 has been pushed back to June 23 as he suffered a hand injury during a training session, according to Boxing News.

As for Canelo, he could face a suspension due to testing positive for clenbuterol. He states the result came after he ate contaminated meat. Despite the failed drug test, Golovkin still wants his rematch with the Mexican to take place.

He said: "I was surprised this happened, because knowing Canelo and his team, I didn't expect they were using some kind of forbidden substances. It is unpleasant to see this go in that direction. I want competition between athletes, not laboratories. A clean fight, not a medicine fight.

"I still hope the fight happens, as it is the biggest fight in boxing right now, and I would like to be on that level once again."
