Manchester City’s Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong has urged Roberto Mancini to follow up his interest in international colleague Gregory van der Wiel.
Van der Wiel, rated at £10 million by Ajax manager Martin Jol, was named Holland’s Young Player of the Year and has been identified as a potential target at Eastlands and is also wanted by Arsenal.
De Jong told the Daily Star: “I know that Gregory is on our wanted list at Manchester City. I have pleaded with them to sign him, as we could use a good right-back.”
“The tempo of English football will make him stronger still and I’ve recommended him to City’s management,” he added.
Pablo Zabaleta has made the right-back spot his own over the last season, with Richards moving to an unfavoured central position in defence.
Onuoha will be pushed further down the pecking order if van der Wiel joins and the Nigerian-born 23-year-old is a target for Sunderland.
