The UFC is targeting an interim welterweight title bout between two of its top competitors in the division - Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington.

A report from BJPenn.com suggests that the UFC 224 pay-per-view (PPV) will play host to the match-up between "RDA" and Covington, and it all goes down from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on May 12th.

Dos Anjos is a former lightweight champion who has decided to move up to the 170-pound division after some strenuous weight cuts down to 155.

He has been on a tear since joining the division; racking up a three-fight win streak over the likes of Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny, and ex-welterweight king Robbie Lawler.

In his last outing against Lawler, Dos Anjos put on an absolute clinic on "Ruthless," dominating him on the feet and battering his leg so bad that he could hardly move anymore around the Octagon. The Brazilian has certainly earned his shot at the welterweight throne.

Covington has been in headlines for the past several months after vamping up his trash talk to a completely new level, calling out names from Fabricio Werdum to Jon Jones on social media. His work inside the Octagon as of late has been stellar as well.

He has racked up a five-fight win streak that includes victories over Bryan Barberena, Dong Hyun Kim, and Demian Maia.

Covington has talked quite a bit of smack towards Dos Anjos in the past, so there will be a great deal of personal animosity in this fight.

Also expected to take place on the UFC 224 car is a women's bantamweight title fight between current champion Amanda Nunes and challenger Raquel Pennington.

It's currently unknown if the women's title fight or the men's interim title bout will serve as the main event.

Another notable fight on the card features Brazilian jiu jitsu whiz Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza taking on rising star Kelvin Gastelum. Brazilian legends Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida will also be going head-to-head in a middleweight contest.
