One of the hottest topics within the mixed martial arts (MMA) world is whether or not undefeated boxing king Floyd Mayweather will make the jump over to the Octagon.
Mayweather comes hot off a high-profile win over Conor McGregor inside the boxing ring. The pair organized a huge exhibition "Money Fight" in Las Vegas that combat sports fans had been clamoring to see for quite some time.
After a tremendous amount of build up, Mayweather eventually won the fight via 10th round TKO after the Irishman exhausted himself in the early rounds.
In the early promotion for the fight, during he and McGregor's face offs, Mayweather had teased fighting in the Octagon next. He even held a social media live stream in which he said he could make a billion dollars fighting in the UFC.
A ton of speculation has begun to run rampant as to whether or not Mayweather will actually follow through; with rumored opponents from CM Punk to Conor McGregor being named for a fight in the UFC.
Mayweather was recently interviewed and he said that he plans on applying for an MMA license and will train for up to six months before taking a fight. He claims his wrestling is at a level seven out of ten, and thinks he can get it up to a nine before fighting.
He has also expressed interest in training with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Woodley has also said he is open to training "Money."
In a recent appearance on UFC Tonight Woodley said he truly believes Mayweather could 'hold his own' in the Octagon (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“Blocking kicks is really easy,” explained Woodley.
“Once you get to the point where Floyd Mayweather is at, you can see that his boxing, his defense, his ability to see a punch coming in a fraction of a second and avoid or evade that punch, comes from repetition.
"Drilling over and over and over again. So that’s all we would have to do to utilize blocking kicks.
“If you look at mixed martial arts as a sport, there are guys that are in the UFC that don’t have a four out of five in their wrestling or jiu jitsu, so therefore, it’s not kinda crazy that someone with some of the best boxing we’ve ever seen may be able to hold his own.
“Obviously, every round starts on the feet, every fight starts on the feet, and if you can keep it on the feet, I think that he can hold his own with pretty much anyone in that weight division.
"My job is to really just help him avoid being taken down, using angles, using footwork, using defense, how to get back up if he gets taken down.”
What are your thoughts on Woodley saying he thinks Mayweather could hold his own inside the Octagon? Do you think Mayweather will actually step into the cage for a fight in the near future?
