The Charlotte Hornets had hopes of making the playoffs this season but have failed to achieve that goal for the second successive year.

The campaign has turned into another disappointment for them and it must be frustrating for their fans after seeing just how well their stars can play in the last two games.

Dwight Howard posted a historic stat line of 32 points and 30 rebounds in a win over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night and Kemba Walker followed that up with a sensational shooting display.

The two-time All-Star exploded for 46 points on an incredibly efficient 13-of-18 shooting from the field and a franchise-record 10 three-pointers as they obliterated the Memphis Grizzlies 140-79 on Thursday night.

The Hornets became the first team since 1998 to win a game by 60 points or more and it was just the sixth time in league history a team has lost by this margin, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

"That's not something you see every day," Walker said of his team's historic night, per ESPN. "We played well. We knew these guys were short-handed with no Mike Conley and Marc Gasol, who are two awesome players. But we just handled our business."

It was clear that it was going to be a special night for Charlotte and Walker from the tip as the point guard was red-hot early on.

He finished the first half with 35 points and eventually ended with 46 in just 28 minutes as he was only on the court for three quarters.

The Grizzlies simply had no answer for him as he was knocking down shots from all over the floor and ended with a franchise-high 10 makes from beyond the arc.

"Tonight I shot the ball really well," Walker said. "My teammates did a great job of getting me open. We just had to pick up our games because we knew Dwight wasn't playing. I thought we did a great job doing that."

Howard was missing through suspension after he picked up his 16th technical of the season against Brooklyn on a night when he became just the third player in the last 36 years to post a 30-30 game.

"Two nights in a row it was fun," Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said of the back-to-back performances by Howard and Walker. "I mean what Dwight did last night and what Kemba did tonight was just fun to watch. It's deserving for both guys."

The 61-point win is the largest in Hornets history and it at least gave the home fans something savour from an otherwise disappointing season.

The same definitely can't be said for the fans in Memphis as this lacklustre effort compounded their miserable year and sees them own the worst record in the NBA at 19-53.
