Gunners encouraged to sign Senegalese international

Bacary Sagna has urged Arsene Wenger to sign fellow countryman Pape Diakhate from Dynamo Kiev to ease the Gunners’ defensive woes.

Arsenal are reportedly in the market for a central defender, with fears over the futures of William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell.

Wenger has identified his defence as the weak link and wants a partner for Thomas Vermaelen.

Earlier in the week, Wenger was encouraged by comments made by Wereder Bremen giant Per Mertesacker but Werder have since warned the Gunners off.

Recent speculation, though, has linked Diakhate, who spent last season on loan with Saint Etienne, with a move to the Emirates and caught the eye of right-back Sagna.

The France international told the Daily Mirror: “I know him. He is Senegalese like me and plays for the national team. He played for Nancy in France so I played against him a few times.

“I have met him a few times and he is a very good guy and a good player. He is very dangerous at set-pieces.

“I don’t know what the plan is for next year. We are all waiting to see what the manager does but he would be very welcome in our team,” Sagna added.
