What the Liverpool fans did to Michael Owen

Every Liverpool player received a warm welcome back to Anfield, with the exception of one person.

Michael Owen, the former boy wonder who tarnished his legacy in the eyes of the Liverpool supporters by spending three seasons with fierce rivals Manchester United, was booed by pockets of the crowd throughout the afternoon.

Even when his name was read out before kick-off, there were jeers.

Owen also received abuse on social media

And the abuse, you’ll be shocked to hear, wasn’t just limited to inside the stadium.

Many fans on social media were also angry that Owen was playing for a Liverpool ‘Legends’ team - they believe he’s undeserving of that title and you can understand why…

The 38-year-old now has a bizarre relationship with Liverpool and the fans who once adored him.

He’s an official ambassador for the Reds - much to the annoyance of many supporters - and insists that he’s always loved the club.

But there are people in Merseyside who will never forgive Owen for his decision to accept Sir Alex Ferguson’s offer to join the Red Devils back in 2009.
