Liverpool are lining up an £8 million bid for Atletico Madrid winger Simao Sabrosa to replace the Chelsea-bound Yossi Benayoun after he admitted he wants to play in the Premier League.
The Portugal international has just one season left to run on his contract with the Europa League champions and looks set to leave Spain in the summer.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has been promised significant funds to spend on improving his squad after a disappointing seventh place finish last term.
The Spaniard is an admired of Simao, who impressed during Atletico’s victory over the Anfield side on their way to the Europa League trophy.
In the Daily Star, Simao is quoted as saying: “Nobody has spoken with me in the last days about this subject.
“I only say that some people in Madrid have suggested that Atletico are preparing my sale, but I don’t know much.
“I have always been interested in playing in the Premier League, but in my head is the World Cup and I have a deal with Atletico,” he added.
Benitez is looking to add more proven attacking steel to his team after Liverpool failed to qualify for a European competition for the first time this century.
Madrid are willing to cash in on Simao now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer but Liverpool will still have to pay around £8 million.
