Carlisle manager Greg Abbott has conceded defeat in his chase for one of his top summer transfer targets.

Abbott has so far drafted in defender Sean McDaid from Doncaster on a free transfer, but has already called on fans to be patient as he bids to further strengthen his squad.

"We found out that one of our priority targets is attracting attention from a Premier League club and that has staggered me," said Abbott.

"I thought that he would maybe get interest from the Championship, but it's higher than that, so you have to be realistic and think that you probably won't get that kind of player.

"That's just something that you have to accept because everyone is obviously going to be targeting those players who will make a real impact.

"Most clubs will have identified players like that months ago, so it's now a case of trying to persuade them that your club is the right place to be."
