Sunday's action-packed Bahrain Grand Prix lived up to expectation yet the race will be remembered for one moment and one moment only.

In a catastrophic mix-up, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen ran over one of his mechanics' legs when he was given the green light to leave the pits.

Raikkonen did what any driver would when he saw the lights turn green so he was completely unaware that his rear left tyre still hadn't been changed.

Unfortunately for the mechanic, who has been named as Francesco Cigarini, he fractured his shinbone and fibula in a brutal double leg break.

Cigarini has since had surgery and confirmed the procedure was successful on Instagram: "Surgery OK. I have to thank all the people worried for me. Nothing else, just a big thanks. Hugs!"

Ferrari have been fined €50,000 by the FIA for the gruesome incident, adding to the €5,000 fine they received during practice on Friday.

It made for a mixed day for Scuderia with Sebastian Vettel claiming his second win of the season to go 17 points clear at the top of the leaderboard.

RAIKKONEN & VETTEL REACT TO LEG BREAK

What's interesting is how Raikkonen - who was frustrated after being forced to retire - and Vettel reacted to the mechanic breaking his leg.

Whereas Raikkonen showed little remorse in his post-race interview and cared more about not being able to race, Vettel cut a sad figure despite not even being involved.

"I don't see what happens," said Raikkonen. "My job is to go when the light is green.

"Unfortunately he got hurt but my job is to go when the light goes green. I don't know more than that. I didn't finish the race so it is not great."

Vettel, on the other hand, said of his win: "A bit sad because one of our mechanics got injured. A mixed day overall."

Raikkonen is known by Formula One fans as 'The Iceman' for his icy persona, but he could have taken a leaf out of Vettel's book and shown a bit more compassion to the poor mechanic.

It just goes to show the difference in class and mentality between Ferrari's two drivers.
