Liverpool haven't enjoyed many moments this sweet since Istanbul in 2005.

The Reds may have won a few domestic trophies and even got to the Champions League final in 2007, but defeating Manchester City in their own backyard to seal a 5-1 aggregate win is certainly on a par with them.

The fact Liverpool went into the tie as serious underdogs just says it all about Jurgen Klopp's management of this group of players, with the Premier League side now third favourites to win the competition.

Their performance at the Etihad was dogged, but effective.

They were forced to soak up a lot of pressure in the first-half, particularly after Gabriel Jesus' early goal, but they came back fighting after the break, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scoring two truly famous goals.

The pair have been Liverpool's standout players of the season, with Firmino taking his Champions League tally to nine goals in 12 games.

However, there was something about Klopp's management of the duo at the Etihad that proved so decisive in the game.

In the second-half, it was noticeable that Liverpool's front three had completely changed positions.

Sadio Mane was on the right, Salah was operating in a Lionel Messi-like role, with Firmino being deployed in an unnatural role on the left.

Nevertheless, it worked a treat, with Liverpool fans declaring that it was the masterstroke that decided the game.

LIVERPOOL FANS REACT

Firmino's goal actually came courtesy of his presence on the left, with the energetic Brazilian forward picking up on a mistake from Nicolas Otamendi and then calmly beating Ederson at the far post.

However, the night could have ended on a sour note, with Firmino nearly getting himself sent off while celebrating his goal.

If you watch the footage above closely, the Brazilian was close to taking his shirt off to celebrate - like he did at Anfield during the 4-3 win - but clearly remembered that he was already on a yellow card for a cynical foul on Kevin De Bruyne.

Klopp would have been livid if one of his key players was absent for the first leg of the semi-final because of a celebration...
