Real Madrid will make a sensational bid to sign Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard worth a combined £110 million, according to reports.
The Spanish giants are looking to splash the cash for a second successive summer having spent around £140 million to lure Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.
With the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager, Madrid are expecting to challenge for the Champions League title and are preparing for another expensive summer.
A club source said last night: “There will be a couple of signings in the next two weeks but the big names will arrive after the World Cup.
“This is not madness. Rooney would be perfect for Real Madrid because of his hunger and desire.
“It is not impossible to sign him. People said that initially about David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, but they both made the move.
“In football nothing is impossible for Florentino Perez,” the source added.
The former Chelsea boss looks certain to sign Maicon, with whom he won the treble last season at Inter Milan.
His top targets, though, are currently plying their trade in the Premier League; his number one priority is Gerrard, a player he tried to sign whilst manager at Stamford Bridge.
The ‘Special One’ is willing to shell out £30 million for the Liverpool captain, which is Liverpool’s reported asking price.
Rooney is also high on Mourinho’s shopping list, with Real willing to pay up to £80 million for the Manchester United striker, the same price it took to prise Ronaldo from England.
The Spanish side will use Rooney’s former United team mate Ronaldo to persuade the former Everton prodigy to leave England and another helping factor will be the mounting debts of both Liverpool and Man Utd.
