Colchester have completed the signing of former Bristol City defender Brian Wilson on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, released by the Robins at the end of last season, is reunited with U's manager John Ward who also signed Wilson during his spell in charge at Cheltenham.

Ward told the club's official website: "He can play as a full-back, a winger or a wing-back. I signed him at Cheltenham for £50,000 and he went on to Bristol for £150,000 a couple of years later."

He added: "He has played 60-odd games in the Championship and, although he has been unlucky with injuries, they've cleared up now and we've got a good player..

"He has plenty of pace and can score a goal. He got 11 for me at Cheltenham in that promotion season."
