Former Shrimpers skipper looking to new chapter

Adam Barrett is looking forward to starting a new chapter of his career at Crystal Palace after enduring a difficult final season with Southend.

The defender left the Shrimpers this summer, where he had made well over 200 appearances, before signing a two-year contract at Selhurst Park. The 30-year-old felt it was the right time to move on after having spent six years at Roots Hall.

"I had two years left on my deal at Southend, but unfortunately due to the problems that the club are going through at the moment it was best, in terms of my career I had to leave," Barrett told Palace's official website.

"It has been a torrid time down there so I handed in my 14 days notice to the club as financially they could not afford to pay wages, which in turn allowed me to join Palace on a free."
