Shrimpers snap up duo

Southend have confirmed they have signed left-back Peter Gilbert and striker Barry Corr on pre-contract agreements.

The duo, who have been training with the financially-troubled team, will sign two-year contracts once the transfer embargo is lifted.

Former Wales Under-21 international Gilbert, 26, who has played under new Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock at Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday, returns to Roots Hall after being on trial 12 months ago.

He spent last season at Northampton, where he made 29 appearances, but was released after he delayed signing a new contract at Sixfields.

Irishman Corr, 25, who has also been managed by Sturrock twice before at Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon, was at Exeter in the 2009/10 campaign where he played 34 times netting three goals but was released in May.
