Hammers on course for Mexican signing

West Ham have insisted they are confident of tying up a deal for Mexican winger Pablo Barrera within the next seven days, according to ESPN, despite rumours of work permit problems.

The Irons were impressed with Barrera during the World Cup and look to have outbid several teams vying for his signature.

Pumas’ sporting director Mario Trejo said: “I must admit that after analysing the offers of Espanyol, West Ham and Everton, there is one that has convinced us more than the rest."

New manager Avram Grant, who was unveiled yesterday, has confirmed he will be in charge of transfers at the Boleyn Ground and has already made one signing.

Thomas Hitzlsperger moved to East London before Grant was confirmed as Gianfranco Zola’s successor and the Israeli is eying more deals in the near future.
