Bournemouth striker Steve Lovell is ready to step up his training ahead of the Cherries campaign in League One.

Lovell, the half-brother of Cherries boss Eddie Howe, has returned to the club where he started his career 12 years ago. The 29-year-old was released from club Partick Thistle in March and underwent surgery at the end of last season to cure a long-standing ankle problem.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe told the Daily Echo: "Steve is recovering from his ankle operation. He is coming along but we don't expect to see him (in games) until towards the end of pre-season."

He added: "He has been out for a period of time and had quite a lot done to his ankle so we will have to step him up gradually. We don't want to push him too early.

"Missing games and training during pre-season is going to put them behind so we will have to assess them individually when they return to see how they are."

The striker was one of four players who had to sit out the 4-0 friendly defeat to Tottenham at Dean Court on Saturday along with Ryan Garry, Tim Stephenson and Danny Ings.
