At long last, it would appear Arsenal have found Arsene Wenger's long-term replacement.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed in principle to become the Gunners' new manager and an announcement will be made in the coming days.

Arsenal correspondent for Goal Chris Wheatley claims a contract hasn't yet been signed, but the important thing is they are close to clearing up a lot of confusion.

Arteta's seemingly imminent appointment will no doubt divide Arsenal fans, with many of the opinion that the Spaniard is too young and too inexperienced for the role.

He's only 36 years old and having hung up his boots in 2016 and spent the past two years at Manchester City as assistant manager, his coaching CV isn't very long.

Nevertheless, he has the backing of Wenger and the Frenchman claims Arteta's knowledge of Arsenal will serve him well.

"He has all the qualities to do the job, yes and I think as well he is one of the favourites," Wenger told beIN Sports.

WENGER BACKS ARTETA AS MANAGER

"He was a leader, and he has a good passion for the game and he knows the club well, he knows what is important at the club and he was captain of the club. Why not?

"I left a lot of experience behind me, people who were with me like Steve Bould who has six years experience, and Jens Lehmann too.

"He (Arteta) has been an assistant of [Pep] Guardiola as well, so overall I think he has the qualities."

Arsenal players were told recently that Arteta was 90% certain to succeed Wenger and it seems the appointment is on the brink of coming to fruition.

However, there could be trouble on the horizon. Head of medical services Colin Lewin lost his job on Monday and David Ornstein said the decision 'shocked and stunned' the players.

And it turns out that Lewin was actually sacked due to a recommendation made by Arteta, who blames him for rushing him back from injury during his time as Arsenal captain.

Arteta has clearly held a grudge all these years and now that he's about to become Arsenal manager, one of his first decisions was to get Lewin sacked.

If Arsenal players were really that upset about Lewin's unexpected departure, there's a good chance they're going to be angry with Arteta. Good start.
