Brighton boss wants Whing to stay

Brighton manager Gus Poyet has urged Andrew Whing to stay and fight for his place for the forthcoming campaign.

The Uruguayan accepts he may not be able to guarantee regular first team football to the defender, who spent time on loan at Chesterfield last term, although he has featured in some of Albion's friendly matches this summer.

Another temporary move could be on the cards for Whing, but Poyet will not force him out of the club.

"It was an agreement with Whingy. I talked to him before we came here," Poyet told The Argus. "I explained to him the situation and we agreed it was better for him to stay behind and see what is going to happen."

He added: "He trains every day and never complains, so I am not going to push him out and push him into a bad situation which is not fair for a professional like Whingy. He knows it is going to be difficult for him to play but you never know what is going to happen.

"Sometimes you don't think you have a chance and then suddenly you are in the team but I cannot promise him anything - he knows that. The idea is to give him a chance to find a place where he can play football."
