New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has targeted former Reds defender Sami Hyypia as he tries to bring Champions League football back to Anfield, according to reports.
In order to seal the shock signing, Hodgson is willing to offer Hyypia, who he has worked with during a spell as Finland manager, a player-coach role.
The 36-year-old centre-back left Liverpool last summer to move to Bayer Leverkusen but still holds the Merseysiders in high regard.
Hodgson has already brought in young defender Danny Wilson from Rangers for £2 million and would also like to add experience at a cheaper price.
Hyypia, who has worn the red and white colours over 450 times, has just one year remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga club and could be available for as little as £500,000.
