Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins will be keeping a close eye on the fitness of Michael O'Connor and Niall Canavan after injuries to the players forced him not to risk the duo in the 1-0 friendly win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Midfielder O'Connor was an unused substitute at Glanford Park while defender Canavan was left out of the squad altogether.

Adkins told the club's official website: "Michael O'Connor was just feeling his thigh a bit in the warm-up. He's been a little uncomfortable so we didn't want to risk him because he's going to be a big player for us this year."

He added: "Niall Canavan has a bit of patellar tendonitis. That is because the ground is a bit hard so he hasn't trained with us all week. Hopefully that will settle down a bit."
