Arsenal edge ahead in race for World Cup keeper

Arsenal are front runners in the race to sign Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, according to reports.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is know to want to bring in a new stopper to replace error-prone Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.

Arsenal have been linked with Gianluigi Buffon and Joe Hart in recent weeks but have moved ahead in the race to sign Holland's number one.

With Ajax's financial crisis well-documented, Stekelenburg could be available on the cheap as the club try to hand on to other high-profile names such as Luis Suarez.

The price being touted for the 27-year-old is just £4 million and that would allow Wenger to concentrate on strengthening other areas such as centre-back.

An Ajax insider told the News of the World: "I don't think Luis Suarez will leave us this summer but as for the others, there's a good chance one or two have to leave.

"I know there's an English club interested in the goalkeeper, for sure," the insider added.
