Arsenal eye World Cup defensive ace

Arsenal will turn their attention to Germany defender Per Mertesacker as they bid to solve their defensive crisis after Sol Campbell walked out on the club.

Campbell became the fourth defender to leave the Emirates after William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre were also released earlier this summer and Philippe Senderos joined Fulham.

Arsene Wenger had wanted Campbell to stay for longer than a year but the former Tottenham player has decided to move up north to Newcastle.

After bringing Laurent Koscielny to North London, Wenger is eyeing another defensive addition as Johann Djourou is injured, leaving just Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen.

Mertesacker has just two years to go on his contract with Werder Bremen and the Gunners believes he will be available for as little as £10 million.
