Bristol City have refused to comment on speculation linking them with England goalkeeper David James.

Reports on Thursday suggested the npower Championship club had joined the race to sign the 39-year-old following his release by Portsmouth.

Asked about the prospect of signing James, boss Steve Coppell said: "I can't confirm or deny that. I never talk about individual names. If a deal is done, I will speak about it."

James, who played in three of England's games at the World Cup, recently pulled out of transfer talks with Celtic.
