Wenger refuses to rule out deal for World Cup ace

Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a summer move for Werder Bremen centre-back Per Mertesacker but has denied rumours he is close to his next signing.

Metresacker impressed at the back for Germany during the World Cup and, although Laurent Koscielny has already joined Arsenal this summer, Wenger wants another defender.

Koscielny did well alongside Thomas Vermaelen during the Emirates Cup but, after a lot of departures from his backline, Wenger now needs strength in depth.

Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas were all released last month, while Philippe Senderos left the club for Fulham in search of first team football.

This leaves the Gunners short at the back so a raft of players have been linked, including Mertesacker and Udinese’s Cristian Zapata.

Asked about Mertesacker, Wenger said: “I wouldn't like to comment on names because it raises the price straightaway 50 per cent.”
