Arsene Wenger's pursuit of a centre-back has taken another twist after he was linked with a move for Phillippe Mexes.
The Arsenal boss currently has a depleted backline after William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikel Silvestre all left the Emirates during the summer and - despite the signing of Lorient defender Laurent Koscielny - Wenger is after more cover.
Wenger has been linked with a whole host of stoppers during the transfer window, and caughtoffside.com now reports that he has French international Mexes in his sights.
Mexes, 28, currently plies his trade with Roma and has been strongly linked with a transfer away from the Giallorossi before the start of the new season.
Zenit St Petersburg are reportedly in the frame for his signature, but there are suggestions that Arsenal are on the verge of launching a £9 million bid.
The Londoners have been forced to turn their attentions to the former Auxerre defender after they were told to pay in excess of €30 million for Montpellier centre-back Emir Spahic.
Montpellier president LouLou Nicollin said: "[Spahic] has three years remaining on his contract. They [Arsenal] signed [Laurent] Koscielny from Lorient for €12 million, and Spahic is worth three times what Koscielny is worth."
