Hearts are in talks with Republic of Ireland striker Stephen Elliott.

The 26-year-old attended the club's pre-season friendly against Blackburn and will continue discussing a possible move from Preston.

A club statement read: "We've been talking to Stephen over the last day or so and will continue to do so over the coming days. He's our guest at the (Blackburn) game as he takes a look around the stadium and our facilities. This has also given him the opportunity to sit down with Jim Jefferies to discuss things."

Meanwhile, Marius Zaliukas has been named club captain for the new season.

Jefferies told Hearts News: "I made Marius captain when I came to the club and he did the job well. "He has been captain for our pre-season friendlies and will be skipper for the season.

"He is vocal, has a presence about him, is a quality player and a leader."

The defender's contract expires in December but Jefferies added: "There is time yet to talk to him and hopefully we can keep him longer. "
