Inter Milan have sensationally ruled themselves out of the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano as Barcelona prepare to swoop, according to the Daily Mail.
Mascherano has told the Reds that he wants to quit Anfield and be reunited with former boss Rafael Benitez at the San Siro.
However, now Inter president Massimo Moratti has admitted the club cannot afford the Argentine captain, paving the way for Barca.
Whilst accepting Mascherano’s wish to leave the club, Roy Hodgson is not likely to let him go on the cheap and has quoted around £25 million.
Moratti admitted: “At this moment, we're unable to make any transfers of this magnitude.
“Mascherano for €30m (£25m)? It's not possible at this price because we haven't sold anyone,” he added.
Having failed with a £35 million bid for Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, the Catalan side are now preparing to bring in two players for that sum of money.
Mascherano is one, with Mesut Ozil – Germany’s World Cup sensation – being the other.
And Ozil will cost them only £10 million, leaving enough money left over to pay Liverpool’s asking price for Mascherano.
