Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has called on the Blues fans to give new £6 million pound Serbian striker Nikola Zigic time to settle at St.Andrews following his debut on Saturday.

McLeish seemed happy with the 6ft 8ins former Valencia and Racing striker, who came on as a second half substitute as the Blues came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

“He was a presence and will cause problems but I’ll be expecting a lot more not only from Zigic but everyone else,” said McLeish.

“He’s got an international pedigree but it’s a new league for him.”

Zigic spent four years in La Liga after playing for Serbian club Red Star Belgrade and McLeish is hoping that the Premier League will suit the big target man’s style of play.

“Playing in England is completely different to La Liga, he would be starved of balls in La Liga and he would only get the delivery if his team mate got to the byline.”

“The longer ball from the back in English football is something a little bit new for him and I’m going to have to do a wee bit of work on the training ground to help him improve in that respect.”
