Arsenal Given boost in chase for keeper

Arsenal have been encouraged in the race for Shay Given after Roberto Mancini admitted he would allow the stopper to leave Manchester City if he wishes.

Both of City’s keepers, Given and Joe Hart, have threatened to walk out if they are not No.1 this season – and Hart seems to have got the call after keeping Tottenham at bay on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger is looking for a new first choice stopper, as he has concerns over Manuel Almunia and Lukas Fabianski after some high-profile blunders from the duo.

He has already offered for Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer, who wants to move to the Emirates, but he is likely to be a shot term option with the option of becoming a coach when he finishes his playing career.

Another possibility for Given would be Fulham – if Schwarzer decides to make the switch – although Robert Green would be another option for Mark Hughes.

Mancini said: “I hope that he can stay because we are in four competitions this season, but I will respect his decision if he wants to leave.”

And Given has intimated he would be willing to move for first team football: “I haven't joined Manchester City to sit on the bench or whatever. I've gone there to play.”
