Inter Milan have changed their transfer target from Liverpool's Javier Mascherano to Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio, according to the Daily Mail.
Mascherano has told the Reds he would like the chance to move on this summer but as of yet no one has offered for him.
Inter recently admitted they could not afford the 24-year-old, which opened the door for Barcelona to capture him.
And now it appears the European champions have completely ended their pursuit of the Argentine skipper after tabling a bid worth £12.5 million plus defender Nicolas Burdisso.
This is around half the price Liverpool are asking for Mascherano and Inter will be able to shift a player who is surplus to requirements and get him off the wage bill.
Mascherano's only hope of an Anfield escape route now seems to be in the hands of Spanish champions Barca, whose playmaker Lionel Messi has urged to snap up his compatriot.
Mascherano will not be used today against Trabzonspor - but that is because he has a calf strain rather than to ensure he is not ineligible for European competition for his next club.
The Reds have offered him a new four-year deal worth around £100,000 per week in order to keep him on Meerseyside but are also looking into the possibility of signing Scott Parker as a replacement.
