United target left out of Europa League clash

Raul Meireles was omitted from FC Porto’s Europa League victory over Genk as speculation of a move to Manchester United grows.

Meireles has been linked with a number of clubs, including United and Chelsea, and the Portuguese side have decided not to risk losing out on money by cup-tying him.

Sir Alex Ferguson was reported to have been interested on Mesut Ozil, but the German decided to join Real Madrid instead, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola.

And now the Red Devils will move for Meireles instead, after seeking a recommendation from former assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz, now Portugal’s head coach, still keeps in touch with Fergie and is likely to give the 27-year-old a glowing reference.
