Barcelona are reportedly set to offer Liverpool Martin Caceres and Alex Hleb in a players-plus-cash deal for Javier Mascherano.
The Spanish giants have been set a deadline of Sunday to meet Liverpool's £21 million valuation, and are thought to be willing to offer two internationals as part of a potential deal.
Reds boss Roy Hodgson was left unhappy after the unsettled Argentine declined to take part in the Manchester City defeat on Monday. Various sources reported that Barca had offered £12 million plus Alexander Hleb over the weekend, but neither club confirmed the rumour.
If Mascherano is to leave Anfield, Hodgson is keen to get a deal done as soon as possible, giving himself an opportunity to spend any funds generated in the closing stages of the transfer window.
Hleb, a Belarus international with Premier League experience at Arsenal, and Caceres, a Uruguayan international who spent last season on loan at Juventus, would provide Liverpool with new options in midfield and defence respectively.
The Guardian reports that Barca aren't able to meet the asking price, but will offer the pair alongside £16.5 million before their deadline passes.
Hleb would fill in for the departed Mascherano, while versatile Caceres would provide competition at both the central defence and right back positions. His arrival would also free Hodgson to sell Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who is linked with a move to Juventus.
